Reclaiming Spaces: Celebrating a year of fighting street harassment in Oxford

Launching a call for Art / Photography / Poetry  on the theme of “Reclaiming Spaces”

Have you ever felt intimidated walking down the street? Or thought someone said or did something inappropriate in a public space? Or on the internet?

OxfordHollabackStreet

Hollaback! Oxford is part of a global community of local activists who work to end street and online harassment as we aim to give all people equal access to public spaces. We invite people to submit reports to our online map to record places in the city where people may have experienced street harassment or racist and homophobic abuse.

In August 2017, we are celebrating one year since our launch in Oxford, where we have offered a safe space for people to share experiences and developed solidarity so people feel empowered to respond. As part of our anniversary, we are planning a creative event using art and multimedia to raise awareness about Hollaback! and encourage people affected by street harassment to reclaim those spaces that we might associate with fear.

We want to prompt dialogue and awareness in our community, so we are hosting and curating an exhibition at Fusion Arts, Cowley Road for art, photography, poetry, shortfilms, interactive activities – all ideas are welcome on the theme of “Reclaiming Spaces”  If there is enough interest we will also produce a small brochure of poetry or Flash Fiction writing.

We are also looking for volunteers to help run the exhibition, join the launch event on 5th August where we will have music poetry reading and comedy. We would also love to hold an art day in advance so if you know anyone with a studio willing to help out please get in touch.  We’d be more than happy to meet / arrange a phone call to discuss ideas so drop us a line if you have any questions. Look forward to hearing from you!
